The directing is fantastic, I love the dolly zoom and wide angle lenses on Clara as she dreams about the blackboards. As soon as Clara wakes up, it is revealed that they at in a second layer. Then the episode does not treat the audience like a beginner, it powers through the reveals, which a lesser show would build up too. For example how they talk about how everything might not be real before they go into the backstory of them finding the dream crabs. It will often give you information that will be important later, but distracts you with other information. Like how the dream crabs make you “Examine everything in case it is a lie.” The dialog is extremely tight, each of the characters shine, and a lot of it reflect the themes of the episode. I love this special, My favourite of the Christmas specials. I love that 12/Clara confront their lies in Death in Heaven, and finally forgave each other by traveling again. Murray Gold's best tracks for S8 are here, I love that every supporting character, maybe save for Santa himself, all get a satisfying mini-arc within the story. Props to Moffat for finally redeeming an underwritten character by actually using him well.Īll in all, I love everything about it.

You really feel for Clara and (gasp) her love for Danny. After all, this is a Clara-centric story, and Jenna Coleman absolutely shines. It was also the most emotional Christmas story to not involve a regeneration, and one of the few stories in children's television that attempted to tackle grief, loss, and moving on.Ĭapaldi wasn't given much to work with, but this story wasn't really about him. I love that Last Christmas works both as an individual one-shot and as an epilogue or coda Dark Water/Death in Heaven (Think Scherzo wrapping up Neverland and Zagreus). Oh, and one of the funniest scenes in Doctor Who with Santa and The Doctor arguing over how unbelievable The Doctor is and how things are 'Dreamy Weamy'. I still think it should be "every christmas is the/our last christmas" rather than "every christmas is last christmas".

Stupid I know but in that moment it genuinely all mattered, and it showed how different the show can be viewed when it isn't spoiled, plus just how invested in Doctor Who I am. It may not be universal but I will never forget that feeling of emotional exhaustion. That moment where Santa appears one last time was fist pumpingly, cheeringly awesome and accompanied with much out loud yelling of "Please! Please let her be staying". (Honorable mention goes to "Really" "Really" "Really" ".dead." (Again, assisted by the same music)). To cut a long story short, completely in tears on Christmas day sat alone in my living room waiting to see if Clara was going or not. "But it never would have worked out, he was impossible". Him never seeing her as anything but her young self.

The Christmas Cracker callback to Time Of The Doctor. In particular the music of that scene "Every Christmas is last christmas" utterly shredded my heart. Not knowing really kept the tension up towards the end, and as someone who considers Clara to be their favourite companion it was genuinely upsetting when The Doctor showed up at the end of her life and all hope seemed lost. It was this episode where nobody really knew whether Clara/Jenna would be sticking with the show, or if this would be her departure. I adore this episode, and it's almost entirely because it was in no way spoiled for me.
